A.V. Baucom is proud to announce that we will be joining millions of children, parents, teachers, administrators, and community leaders from the United States and at least 10 other countries on October 6th for International Walk to School Day.

The very first International Walk was held in Great Britain to encourage pedestrian safety.   As the years passed, more countries got involved in this exciting event.  In 1999, Ireland joined the walk along with 44 schools in New Zealand, 250 in Canada, and 525 schools from the USA.  Each year the WALK gets bigger and better.

President George W. Bush Pledges Support for US Walkers

quotes_bush.jpg (4188 bytes)"I commend the Partnership  for a Walkable America and all organizations involved in today’s events for your dedication to helping improve the health and safety of our Nation’s young people. Your efforts contribute to a stronger America.”

George Bush, President of the United States of America
WHY WALK?
  1. To encourage physical fitness through walking which is one of the easiest and safest ways to exercise.
  2. To raise awareness of how walkable our community is and where improvements need to be made. ex.  sidewalks and greenways
  3. To reduce traffic congestion, pollution and speeds near our schools
  4. To share valuable time with community leaders, parents, and our children.
  5. To show our American pride.

Please join us.  Parking will be available.

We are hoping to have many Apex community leaders as well as members of the Apex Police and Fire Departments to walk with our children.

TIME:  7:15 am (start walking time is 7:30 am)

DATE:  October 6 - Wednesday

PLACE:  C.C. Jones Memorial Park on Holleman Street (by the CCB Bank on Salem Street)

When we reach the school yard we will stay together until Mrs. Reynolds or Mrs. Redfern dismisses our students to their classes.

INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL WEEK

MON. OCT. 4th  -  KICK OFF DAY
Every child will be provided with a foot charm and asked to wear yellow.  The foot represents the kick off of the mileage club program and the yellow is a reminder that we must all use caution while walking on sidewalks and streets.

TUES. OCT. 5th  -  EARTH FRIENDLY DAY
Everyone wears green to represent our beautiful green earth.  Green can also represent the best color for healthy snacks.  Talk about how many fabulous sights they can see during their walks outdoors.  Try to make posters on this day.  THEME:  "Walking is great because....."

WED. OCT. 6th  -  INTERNATIONAL WALKING EVENT
Students bring their posters and meet with their families at CC Jones Memorial Park for a fabulous walk through downtown Apex and to school.  All Baucom staff members are encouraged to attend and join in the walk.  Community leaders will also be invited.

THURS. OCT. 7th  -  SIGN THE SHOE DAY
Stop by the Art Room hallway and sign the giant walking shoe as your pledge to keep walking and join the mileage club.

FRI. OCT. 8th  -  TAKE A WALK WITH YOUR TEACHER DAY
At some time during the day, walk with your teacher to see where our walking trail leads.  One lap will equal 1/2 mile and flags will mark off the trail.
