1st Grade Lesson Plans

Rock Classification
Although designed for 4th grade, this great lessons covers rock classification and has some great activities you can use with your class. The edible rocks sounds fun, delicious, and really gets the concepts across.

The Mineral and Gemstone Kingdom - This site contains a huge database of many different minerals and gemstones you can search through. Complex for primary students but you may find it helpful and interesting.

Here’s a great way to ties technology into the curriculum. Take a look at the slide show from the awesome site, Volcano World. You may even want to have your class create one of their own.

Rock Cycle Experiments - Although too difficult for most first graders to use alone, this diagram of the Rock Cycle would be a good whole class teacher directed lesson to explain how rocks are formed. You may want to use an activity or 2 to spark their interest in determining why and how rocks are different.

The Geology of the Bathroom - This fascinating site from BBC Education explains the use of rocks in the bathroom. Most students will find the information quite interesting.

The Uses of Rocks and Minerals - This terrific site from NSW lists the uses of many different rocks and minerals.

Ask the Answer Worm - S.K.Worm, the official annelid, or worm, of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service answers students questions about soil. Some of these cover parts of the 3rd grade curriculum.

Improve the Soil in Your Garden Naturally - Learn by a hands on investigation why the earthworm is a living soil factory.

Natural Gemstones - This site from the USGS is filled with lots of information about gemstones. Click on the Mineral Gemstones link for specific characteristics of them.

A Gem of a Story Online - Take a virtual tour through the Janet Annenberg Hooker Hall of Geology, Gems, and Minerals in the Smithsonian. The exhibits will show differences in the characteristics of minerals and gems. Although designed for middle and high school, be sure to check out the Activities. You can use some of the ideas as is or adapt them.

The Mineral Identification Site - This site is currently being updated but is still packed with information about minerals, their characteristics, and how to identify them.

The Mineral Gallery - This site has just about everything you could every want to know about minerals! The graphics are beautiful but the reading level may be difficult to some. I found the Interesting Groupings page quite interesting. 4th grade
