Child Left Behind's Reading First initiative has placed a whole new focus on literacy and
technology is being utilized more and more as a tool to help improve skills in this area. In order to help your child be a competent and skillful
reader in a variety of subjects and formats, expose him or her to a variety of reading
material. The local public libraries can
provide great examples of reading in every imaginable format at no cost to you.
Examine your home to see how many types of reading materials are available there.
Don't forget the catalogs, cereal boxes, packages, cans, books, magazines, flyers, and
more. There are numerous valuable web sites devoted to the importance of
literacy on the Internet.
Read for fun, enjoyment, information,
meaning, depth, beauty, and ease. Make it a daily habit.

Reading is Fundamental is the nation's largest nonprofit children's literacy

This web site, sponsored by public television station, WETA in Washington, D.C., is funded
by a grant from the US Dept. of Education. It features tips on reading and writing
with a special emphasis on teaching children to read and helping those who struggle.

non-profit organization.

kids. All you do is select one you are
interested in (there is a good selection divided up by holidays and other special events),
