About Our Media Center: Our Mission, Our Staff, and Procedures

The mission of NC School Library Media Center collections is to serve the curricular needs of the school community as well as the independent reading interests of the students. The Library Media Center has a collection in excess of 12,000 items available for student and teacher use or check out. To extend lessons and promote 21st Century skills fourteen computers are available for general and database research, word processing and multi-media production, along with various software programs.

The Library Media Coordinators collaborate with teachers to extend curriculum goals in all subjects found in the NC Standard Course of Study.

Using the Library Media Center:

Students circulate weekly with their class, but may visit the Library Media Center daily to return or get new books and/or other materials with their teacher's permission.

How many books may K & 1st grade students check out?

K & 1st grade students check out 1 book weekly unless their teacher recommends 2.

How many books or other materials may 2nd-5th grade students check out?

Generally 2nd-4th graders may check out two items, for example: 2 books or 1 book and 1 magazine or 1 book and 1 audio book, but the decision as to how many items is up to the homeroom teacher. 5th graders may check out 1 audio book or 1 magazine and as many books as they would like, according to the wishes of their teacher, and with the understanding they must be responsible for them.

What about when students are tracked out?

We want students to read! At present we are not restricting retention of books during track out. Students should be reasonable in their choice of materials so others are not prevented from reading due to books being out for long periods. Audio books and magazines are in short supply and should not be kept during track out, nor should popular series books, or other high  demand items like drawing books or the Guinness Book of World Records, etc. Tracked out students are welcome to come in with an adult to check out.

When are materials due and how do I renew my book?

All items are due one week after check out. To renew an item present the item to the circulation desk.

There are restrictions if an item has been reserved or in high demand as to how often it may be renewed.

What happens when books or other materials are overdue?

Students with overdue materials are not allowed to check out until overdue materials are returned.

May I hold or reserve materials?

Depending upon the type of material requested students may hold or reserve materials.

What if I lose or damage a book?

Students must pay for lost or damaged books, but please look high and low for lost books, since we are unable to refund your money should you later find the book. At that point if you have paid for the book you may keep it or choose to donate it back to the Library Media Center. There are no fines for late books.
